The Brief
Create breathtaking films from the worlds most spectacular cities to be shown on a 21 metre video wall that will become the centre piece of P&O Cruises latest £400 million cruise liner the Ventura.
The video wall installation will make the back drop to the Metropolis Bar, a cool sophisticated space over looking the ocean and by night turn into the windows of the world as every evening a new city will be shown.
As well as the night time city sequences P&O Cruises wanted an 'Experience Show' that would blow the passengers away. A feature that could be run during the day as an advertised spectacular. It had to appeal to the entire demographic. Kids and adults alike.
Oh and not forgetting a series of animations that would play after the city sequences.
The problem
The length of the video wall v's the height. We are talking 15 to 1 aspect ratio. That's serious wide screen. Compounded by the volume of data we would need to capture on location.
The Solution
2 years in development and production.
Multiple HD cameras mounted on a single tripod. A motion control head for steady pans.
Record with tapeless technology. Panasonics P2 technology to be exact.
Cities – London, Paris, New York, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney.
Clever editing and colour grading to give seamless joins.
Watchout – A clever piece of software from Dataton that could handle playout on board.
Having cameras destroyed by jet cars at Santa Pod.
Standing next to Typhoon fighter jets taking off at RAF Conningsby.
Swimming with Sharks in Australia.
Jumping out of aeroplanes with large cameras strapped to your head.
The Results
340 hours of raw HD footage.
Incredible footage from the worlds most spectacular cities.
2 beautiful animated sequences.
Mind blowing visuals in the Elements Experience.
